The argument of religion rages constantly throughout our "christian" nation. God and his doctrines are attacked daily by millions of people, both by conscious and unconscious effort. Embryonic Stem Cell research, abortion, evolution, euthanasia, and outright atheism all make big headlines; while other issues have become such an ingrained part of contemporary American society we don't even realize they attack God's teachings (most of TV fits into this category). God is removed from the Pledge of Allegiance because it might be offensive to someone. Recently Ben Stein's film Expelled hit theaters and attacked the evolution/intelligent design debate head on. We humans have become so arrogant by thinking that we can ignore God. "There is nothing greater than us; there is nothing beyond MY intellect, nothing greater than I" could very well replace all of the God-hater's arguments (see my entry on the definition of evil). My argument today is not with all of these attacks on God, there are too many for that. I want to know how anyone can not believe in God.
I heard the best argument a while back in favor of religion, which was really my inspiration for this post. Laura Ingraham on her broadcast from March 19 said, and I'm paraphrasing; life is like gambling. Almost every action in life is a bet, and what we're betting on is life and death. When it comes to religion, why would anyone bet against God and an afterlife? Why do atheists bet on nothing and risk the potential trouble with God later?
Who in their right mind says "No, I don't think God exists. I'm just gonna do whatever I feel like doing. If I die, and God does exist, okay, whatever."
I would rather live my life as if there is a God, and die to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't, and die to find out there is. What logical, stable, rational person bets against everything with nothing? It doesn't make sense to say God doesn't exist, because it would kind of suck to die and come to find out he was up there the whole time. I don't understand.
Why would you bet on nothing, when you can hedge your bet and bet on God?
